Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH), under the umbrella of the State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), is seeking to fill three (3) Rehabilitation Therapist 2 (Therapeutic Recreation) positions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Implements therapeutic programs for individuals with mental health and substance use disorders by utilizing a specific therapy function to teach skills to correct disorders in intellectual, emotional, or motor status of an individual;
- Writes and implements treatment plans;
- Conducts individual and group activities on and off unit;
- Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings discussing future treatment goals and objectives for an individual;
- Participates in Rehabilitation Department hospital-wide activities.

CVH

CVH opened in 1868 as the State?s public hospital for the treatment of persons with mental illness.

All of the services provided by CVH are designed with the concept of "Recovery to Wellness" as their operational framework. Recovery is a process of restoring or developing a positive and meaningful sense of identity apart from one?s condition and then rebuilding one?s life in the fullest sense. Recovery is an individualized patient-centered approach. Achieving and maintaining an optimal state of health and wellness is integrated in our recovery approach. Individuals acquire and practice life skills that will assist them in their recovery process.

Woodward 1 North is a geriatric psychiatry unit with a maximum census of fifteen patients. The unit serves an aging patient population suffering from severe and chronic mental illness, as well as patients with complex medical and nursing needs. The goal of treatment is psychiatric stabilization with the goal of living in an appropriately supportive community setting with the least restrictions possible.

Woodward 2 South is a specialized treatment setting serving the needs of patients with both mental illness and either acquired or traumatic brain injury (ABI/TBI). The unit has a census of fifteen patients. The unit works with the DMHAS ABT/TBI services division to return patients to the community in the most integrated setting possible.

CVH ASD Merritt 2DE is a 30-bed women's rehabilitation unit providing American Society of Addiction Medicine (A.S.A.M.) level 3.7 intensive rehabilitation treatment. This unit specializes in trauma informed care, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and a variety of other clinical approaches to provide holistic care to the individuals we serve. A full range of medication-assisted treatment is also offered.

Qualifications & Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of professional experience in a professional rehabilitation therapeutic recreation program performing such activities as program evaluation, planning and application for individuals with an intellectual disability, emotional disabilities and physical disabilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

- College training in a recognized therapeutic recreation discipline may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
- One (1) year of experience at the level of a Rehabilitation Therapist 1 (Therapeutic Recreation) or its equivalent may be substituted for the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and maintain a certificate as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI), and/or life-saving (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid) from the American Red Cross.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of American Sign Language in certain positions.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
